Learn About Stereo Pair 3D

Side-by-side stereo pairs (aka, stereo cards or stereograms) are the original 3D format and were originally produced by Charles Wheatstone to describe stereopsis in 1838.

Once photography became widely available, many different side-by-side stereoscopic viewers were brought to market. The image, depth and color quality enhance the feeling of immersion. Also, side-by-side stereo pair images can be easily processed for polarized projections.

Stereo pairs consist of two side-by-side images in correct parallax, viewed through a special viewer that shows the left image to the right eye (and the right image to the left eye). Side-by-side stereo pair images can be easily processed for projection in large polarized format.

ViewMaster has to be the most familiar stereoscopic viewer. However, other viewers are available that allow for much larger image size and do not require images to be printed to ViewMaster reels.

Side-by-side 3D works beautifully both in print and on small screen monitors. However, achieving the correct distance and 90 angle between the viewer and the image can be a challenge. Stereocards (of a set size) can be printed for use with certain viewers with a fixed distance/angle for easy viewing.
